Haiti - Environment : Opening of the 2nd Center of Germplasm

Thursday, in Fonds-des-Nègres (Dept. of Nippes) under the high patronage of President Jovenel Moïse, the Ministry of Environment (MDE) inaugurated the 2nd Germplasm Center **.

This center covers an area of 11 hectares, financed by a friendly country of Haiti to the tune of 2.5 million US dollars, like that of the South https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21531-haiti-environment-launch-of-a-central-nursery-in-camp-perrin.html include 8 shadehouses, an administrative building, a training area, a sprouter, a composting center and angrais preparation. It also has a research unit, a warehouse for tools and inputs, a residence for executives and trainees, sanitary blocks, a transplant center and planting of cuttings and stems and a certified seed production center. This center whose construction was launched in August 2017 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-21931-haiti-agriculture-laying-the-foundation-stone-of-the-plant-propagation-center.html , has a production capacity of 4.5 million seedlings per year (70% fruit trees and 30% forest trees).

The ceremony was held in a festive atmosphere and against a backdrop of eco-citizen demonstrations in the presence of President Moïse and his wife Martine, the Prime Minister Lafontant, Government Ministers including Pierre Simon Georges, the Minister of Environment, agents local authorities, representatives of the diplomatic corps, senior religious authorities, parliamentarians, civil society figures and local authorities.

In his speech, Jovenel Moïse said he is proud of this achievement which reinforces the management and production capacity of fruit and forest trees in the country. "This germplasm center is at the service of the population of the 11 communes of the department of Nippes and marks a turning point in the country's reforestation policy."

In addition, Moïse has awarded plaques of honor to several Haitian personalities for their commitment to the promotion and transmission of environmental values. The Elie Dubois Prize was awarded to Mr. and Mrs. Guy Etienne of the College Catts Pressoir and the Nicolas Erckmann Prize was awarded to Alphonse Bruno Mentor of the Macaya Foundation and William Cinéa of the Botanical Garden of Les Cayes.

On his side, Minister Georges thanked the President, the Prime Minister and the project partners for their indispensable support. While welcoming the collaboration between his Ministry and that of Agriculture he recalled "We have also engaged in a green and aggressive diplomacy to mobilize adequate financial resources available to the Haitian Environment and civic action."

The construction of the first Center was launched in July 2017 in Camp-Perrin (South department, Les Cayes district).

4 of these 6 centers are financed through cooperation with friendly countries: 1 by Taiwan (Republic of China) 3 by the Federal Republic of Mexico and 2 by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB)
