Monday, Mgr. Eugene Martin Nugent confirmed that the Holy Father Pope Francis has appointed Mgr. Launay Saturné (President of the Episcopal Conference of Haiti CEH and Bishop of the Diocese of Jacmel), as new Metropolitan Archbishop of Cap-Haïtien. "The Apostolic Nunciature in Haiti urges all priests, religious and lay faithful to accept with a spirit of faith and hope this decision of the Holy Father, which is the expression of his paternal attention and his pastoral concern for the Church in Haiti and all the people of Haiti. All the faithful and people of good will are invited to pray for His Excellency Monsignor Launay Saturné and for the archdiocese of Cap-Haïtien [including the dioceses of Fort-Liberté, Hinche, Gonaïves and Port-de-Paix] that the Spirit of the Lord may continue to work effectively in his Church, so that by a fruitful and wise exercise of sacred ministry, our people may find in Christ an abundance of life," wrote Bishop Eugene Martin Nugent in a note.

This new appointment comes amid a tense situation between President Moïse and the CEH, following the Head of State's condemnation after Mgr. Saturné, known for his outspokenness, denounced during the during 75 years of consecration of Haiti to Our Lady of Perpetual Help last June, the deplorable living conditions of Haitians and criticized some decisions of the Government Moïse-Lafontant.

The date of enthronement of Mgr. Launay Saturné as Metropolitan Archbishop of Cap-Haitien, is not yet known.

Born January 14, 1964 in Delatte (Petit-Goâve) was ordained priest on March 10, 1991 for the archdiocese of Port-au-Prince. Doctor in theology, Mgr Saturné was director of studies and professor of theology at the Grand Seminary of Port-au-Prince. The Holy Father, Pope Benedict XVI named him Bishop of Jacmel in April 2010. Since November 2017, he is President of the Episcopal Conference of Haiti.
