Haiti - FLASH : About 500,000 illegal firearms in the country

Jean Rebel Dorcena, a member of the National Commission for Disarmament, Disarmament and Reintegration (CNDDR), reactivated in March 2019, https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-27161-haiti-security-reactivation-of-the-disarmament-commission.html revealed that the commission avair registered until now close to 100 gangs in Haiti.

It estimates at nearly 500,000 the number of illegal firearms in Haiti, more than double in 4 years of the official estimates of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) which in 2015 advanced the figure of 250,000 illegal weapons in circulation in the country (handguns and large caliber weapons) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-18667-haiti-security-on-over-250-000-illegal-weapons-in-haiti-only-15-are-legalized.html , adding that this number could be revised upwards...

Recall that since its reactivation, the Commission has recovered only twenty weapons that was in the hands of gangs of Cité Soleil who returned them on a voluntary basis after negotiation. Jean Rebel Dorcena claims that many of these gangs are in the pay of leading figures, the opposition and some businessmen, refusing to reveal names, his life being the subject of frequent threats...

He denounces the proliferation of firearms and gangs in Haiti, saying that the trade in arms and ammunition is controlled by a dozen people from the private sector known to the authorities. He deplores the fact that no legal action is being taken against these arms dealers and calls on the authorities concerned for greater control, inter alia, of security agencies and maritime and land borders.
