Haiti - Environment : 41% increase in earthquakes in August 08/09/2020 09:57:37
In its monthly bulletin for August 2020, the Technical Unit of Seismology (UTS) of the Bureau of Mines and Energy reveals that the national and regional seismological networks recorded in Haiti 48 earthquakes of magnitudes between 1.3 and 3.3 throughout the national territory.
This is a 41.1% increase in the number of earthquakes compared to July 2020 (34 earthquakes)
The 2 departments most affected in August are the North-West with 20 earthquakes out of 48 (41.7%) and the South-East with 15 earthquakes out of 48 (31.2%).
UTS says 43.7% of earthquakes (21 of 48) have occurred at sea, posing a tsunami risk when conditions are met.
The earthquakes in August occurred, for the most part, at depths varying between 2 and 43.1 km, thus qualifying earthquakes shallow.
Lets' recall that from January to August 2020, Haiti recorded 344 light earthquakes on its national territory, of which 125 (36.3%) occurred in the North-West department and 89 (25.8%), in the South-East department.
