Haiti - Earthquake : Statement by President Joe Biden

Following the magnitude 7.2 earthquake on the Richter scale which hit Haiti hard on Saturday August 14, 2021 12 km north east of Saint-Louis du Sud https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34479-haiti-flash-magnitude-72-earthquake-in-the-nippes.html US President Joe Biden made the following statement on Saturday :

"In what is already a challenging time for the people of Haiti, I am saddened by the devastating earthquake that occurred in Saint-Louis du Sud, Haiti this morning. We send our deepest condolences to all those who lost a loved one or saw their homes and businesses destroyed. I have authorized an immediate US response and named USAID Administrator Samantha Power as the senior US official to coordinate this effort.

Through USAID, we are supporting efforts to assess the damage and assist efforts to recover those who were injured and those who must now rebuild. The United States remains a close and enduring friend to the people of Haiti, and we will be there in the aftermath of this tragedy."

In addition, reacting to this devastating earthquake, Florida Democratic Congresswoman Frederica Wilson made the following statement :

"I was very disheartened to learn that Haiti has once again been stricken by a devastating force of nature. Today's 7.2 magnitude earthquake has killed dozens of people and injured scores of others. This could not have happened at a worse time as the nation was already reeling from economic and political crises, widespread corruption, and last month's assassination of President Jovenel Moïse. Moreover, Haiti is still struggling to recover from the 2010 earthquake. It is a tragedy that the people of Haiti, who have given new meaning to the word resilience, must now deal with yet another tragic event.

I applaud President Biden for taking swift action to provide U.S. support for Haiti and am hopeful that we will see the extraordinary level of generosity that Americans showed in response to the 2010 earthquake. As the representative of one of the nation's largest Haitian American community, I will be monitoring this situation very closely and provide whatever assistance that I can. My thoughts and prayers are with the people of Haiti and the Haitian diaspora in District 24 and across the United States."
