Haiti - Reconstruction : Extraordinary Summit of UNASUR

The Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), will hold an extraordinary summit Thursday, July 28. Speaking two days before, at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Colombian Maria Emma Mejia, Secretary General of UNASUR stated that the presidents attending the summit, will ratify, at the occasion of the inauguration of newly elected President, Ollanta Humala, [in replacement of Alan Garcia] the presence and the mandate of UNASUR in Haiti, as a political body and of support.

The Secretary said that the final declaration of this summit will focus on the urgency of the regional and social integration of the peoples of the subregion. She reminded to the member countries that the UNASUR had already given $66.2 million dollars to the assistance programs in Haiti. Of this amount, $ 60 million [on the 100 million promised] were paid directly to Haiti or through the multilateral organizations like the World Bank and the InterAmerican Development Bank (IDB). The rest [6.2 million] was sent by the Secretariat of the UNASUR, that maintains food security projects (1), housing (2) and legal assistance (3), according to Rodolfo Mattarollo, Special Representative of UNASUR for Haiti.

(1) The UNASUR manages in Haiti, the project "Pro Huerta" which provides the technology and ensures the training to the farmers, to improve the diet of 15,000 families, with an investment of USD$3 million.

(2) The "A roof for my country", in collaboration with the Chilean Foundation of the same name, which aims to build 854 houses, a clinic and a school at a cost USD$1.8 million.

(3) The last program put in place [USD$1.4 million], provides legal assistance to the Haitians prisoners without financial resources.
