Haiti - Assassination Moïse : The hearing of Rodolphe Jaar postponed for 30 days in the USA
Judge Lisette Reid in the presence of her assistants and prosecutor Andrea Goldbarg asked him if he had spoken with his lawyer about the request for a 30-day hearing postponement, Jaar answered yes and also answered yes when the magistrate told him asked if he understood what he was doing and if he agreed.
After a brief questioning about Jaar's identification and level of education, Judge Reid granted the request for a postponement and the prosecution did not object. The date of the next hearing has not been announced.
This decision by the magistrate means that Jaar will have more time to plead guilty or not guilty, but it will also give prosecutors more time to produce evidence in support of the charges. This delay could also allow the two parties to come to an agreement, which defendants often do to obtain a reduction of their sentence in exchange for their cooperation in the investigation.
Jaar, is being held in a downtown Miami jail, with the right to visit his attorney Joaquín Padilla, a public defender assigned by a judge after determining that Jaar did not have the resources to pay a private defender. Due to Jaar's 14-day health quarantine to prevent the spread of Covid-19, Padilla had been unable to meet him in person in prison, communicating only by telephone. Tuesday the lawyer was finally able to meet in person with his client a few minutes before the start of the hearing.
Recall that Jaar was arrested in the Dominican Republic on January 7, 2022, at the request of the American authorities (FBI) on the basis of statements by Mario Antonio Palacios https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-35640-haiti-flash-palacio-extradited-to-the-usa-first-official-indictment-in-the-assassination-of-president-moise.html . According to US authorities, Jaar voluntarily agreed to be transferred to Miami for trial.
