Haiti - Security : The Bahamas, willing to deploy forces in Haiti
This Wednesday, February 15, 2023 in Nassau, Bahamas, Haiti will be at the center of the 44th meeting of Heads of State and Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM). This meeting will be chaired by Philip Davis the Prime Minister of the Bahamas.

Tuesday, February 14, Bahamian Chancellor Fred Mitchell, said that in addition to climate change, food security and energy security, Haiti is one of the main problems that will be discussed Wednesday at CARICOM, stressing "Haiti has been descending into chaos as a result of a collapse in their political systemn," adding "The United States has been at the front and centre of this [...] that’s part of the reason why they’re bringing such a large delegation. The Bahamas being 90 miles to the north of Haiti and being the transit passage for Haitians on their way to the United States. The US has been trying to find ways to solve the political situation in Haiti and to improve security."

Let's recall that in October 2022, Prime Minister Philip Davis declared that if CARICOM decides that the Haitian situation requires the deployment of security troops, then the Bahamas "will respect this decision".

Once that decision is made in conjunction with the United Nations, National Security Minister Wayne Munroe said the country would be "ready, willing and able to deploy" marines from the Royal Bahamas Defense Force in Haiti.

Mitchell pointed out that discussions are still ongoing as to whether forces will be sent "which is why Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is coming here to discuss with our Prime Minister. Jamaica https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-38757-haiti-flash-jamaica-ready-to-deploy-soldiers-and-police-in-haiti.html and The Bahamas have agreed to provide manpower, if the United Nations decides that there is a force to go into Haiti again."

"The question is how will those modalities be handled? We obviously do not have manpower which is required to undertake such an exercise. But we want to contribute to it, and we want to contribute to a solution."

In addition, on Tuesday February 14, the Prime Minister a.i. Ariel Henry arrived in Nassau, accompanied among others by Ministers Jean Victor Généus (Foreign Affairs) and Émmelie Prophète Milcés (Justice) where he will participate, on February 15 and 16, in a meeting of the CARICOM where he will meet on the sidelines of this meeting, with several Heads of State and Government of various countries of the region and America.

In Haiti, Michel Patrick Boisvert Minister of the Economy, acts in the absence of the Prime Minister.
