Haiti - FLASH : 3 other members of the Haitian economic elite sanctioned by Canada 22/09/2023 08:16:41
Acra is a well-known businessman who served as an advisor to former Prime Minister Laurent Lamothe, while Carl Braun is the vice-president of the board of directors of Unibank, Haiti's largest bank. For his part, Jean-Marie Vorbe is CEO of Sogener, a company in the energy sector. These individuals will be inadmissible to Canada under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and these sanctions prevent Canadian citizens and entities, or those residing in Canada, from maintaining economic relations with the sanctioned individuals. Canada has reason to believe these individuals are "fuelling the violence and instability in Haiti through corruption and other criminal acts and by enabling the illegal activities of armed gangs that terrorize the population and threaten peace and security in Haiti." Let's remember that since November 2022, Canada has imposed sanctions against more than twenty Haitian citizens, whom it describes as the country's "political and economic elite", for their role in the actions of armed gangs...
