Haiti - USA : The Support Mission in Haiti encounters American political obstacles 05/02/2024 08:50:08
The United States has pledged up to $200 million to support the Kenya-led Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS) https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-40603-haiti-news-zapping.html More precisely 100 million dollars in monetary support for the mission (a fraction of the cost estimated between 400 and 600 million) and an additional 100 million from the Pentagon in kind (intelligence services, air transport, communications and medical support.) Of the amount of 100 million, the Biden administration made an initial request for 50 million from Congress which released only 10 million. Subsequently, the Biden administration asked Congress (controlled by the Republicans) for another $17 million to start the process, according to sources familiar with the matter... In addition to the obstacle of justice in Kenya which is currently blocking the Mission https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-41519-haiti-flash-the-high-court-of-nairobi-blocks-the-deployment-of-the-mission-in-haiti.html and https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-41561-haiti-flash-president-ruto-affirms-that-the-kenyan-mission-in-haiti-will-take-place.html , American funding for MMSS in Haiti faces other obstacles in the United States. Members of the US Congress are demanding more information from the Biden administration, including a plan B in case Kenya is unable to lead the MMSS, to approve the requested funds. In the meantime, the funds have not been released… As for the promises of international financial participation in this mission, no information is available on the progress or otherwise of this financing.
