Haiti - Social : International Women's Day, message of reflection from Lesly Condé
This Tuesday, March 8, 2024, International Women's Day, Lesly Condé Ex-Consul General of Haiti in Chicago (August 2004 - May 2018), delivered, as every year, a message of reflections that we invite you to read and share.

Message from Lesly Condé :

"Dear compatriots and friends from everywhere,

It is a distinct privilege for me to be in your company again this year on the occasion of International Women's Rights Day. It was in 1977 that the United Nations decided to dedicate March 8 of each year to women. International Women's Day therefore offers us the opportunity to appreciate all women on the planet, and to talk about their unique contribution to the advancement of our species. Because of all the roles that she has always played in the existence and survival of the human race in all stages of its evolution, woman deserves to be honored without reservation. She is quite simply an irreplaceable being. There is always strength in its delicacy.

Indeed, when we consider all the physical and psychological suffering to which she is subjected from birth because of her gender, we could wonder why she has always preferred to count on the protection of man rather than to enslave him thanks to all the powers she possesses. As her gender gives her attributions and pains that a man could never imagine, we will say that her unusual heroism places her well above man. She is the mother of the human race, and it is thanks to her that our species will continue to exist. However, knowing the man's weaknesses, his vanity and his fragile nature, she accepts his protection, and willingly represents the weaker of the two sexes.

However, even in the most advanced societies, the situation of women still leaves much to be desired. The workplace is, in most cases, dominated by men, and sexual harassment is a reality that she must be prepared to face in one form or another, at one point or another in her career. Alongside all these pressures and all the frustrations they generate, there is also the fact that she is always expected to perform equal if not better than that of men. It seems to me that equal pay for equal work should be the norm in any environment.

Physical violence against women is a subject as delicate as it is unpleasant. At this point, it is a hideous reality that should not be a taboo subject. There are many women who suffer this kind of horror by remaining silent. They therefore become accomplices in a dangerous situation which will only get worse. Furthermore, this type of violent behavior within a home should never serve as an example to children. The latter will grow and reproduce the reactions they have learned at home. By condemning and, if necessary, punishing those guilty of violence against women in the home, we will build better societies.

As for Haitian women, I am one of those who think that they deserve very special consideration, very special respect. In the eyes of all those who know her, she represents an example of self-sufficiency. She is a caring mother, nurse, accountant, diplomat and much more. Our society has always relied on its resilience, its courage, its optimism and its imagination. She is the one who taught us not to be afraid to excel, to always aim high and to never let ourselves sink into discouragement.

In closing, I wish you all an excellent International Women's Day. An environment where women flourish is an environment where life is good."
