Haiti - Health : «AIDS has faces» (dixit Sophia Martelly)
Saturday, the First Lady of the Republic, Ms. Sophia Martelly, who argues for the participation of all men and women, from the youngest to the oldest, in cities and in rural communities, to defeat AIDS, participated in Hotel Montana, to the activities to celebrate the "World Day Against AIDS", organized this year under the theme "Getting to zero".

In the presence of Mr Michel Sidibé, UNAIDS Executive Director, Dr. Florence D. Guillaume, Minister of Public Health and Population, the Ambassador of the United States, Ms. Pamela White, and Mrs. Esther B. Stanislas, President of the "Haitian Platform of Associations of People Living with HIV" (PHAP+), the First Lady stressed the need to intensify the fight against the spread of the disease.

"December 1, reminds us the impact of the disease in our families and in our communities. He also became a day of hope, of the commitment, of the human solidarity," declared Ms. Martelly, calling on all communities around the world, especially that of Haiti, infected and/or affected, to show solidarity attitudes against all forms of discrimination.

Addressing the audience, as President of the Multisectoral Coordination Committee in Haiti (CCM-Haiti), the First Lady stressed the need for behavior change. "AIDS has faces," she has pointed out, while recognizing that the disease is everywhere where the education of children is a problem ; everywhere where the basic social needs are not met ; everywhere where violence and rape are present.

All stakeholders have supported the necessity of joint efforts to defeat the disease. The Ambassador Pamela White, while welcoming the involvement of the First Lady in the quest for answers to health needs in Haiti, acknowledged that the country is on the way of this generation without AIDS, that it is now in the process of demonstrating its ability to reduce new cases.

For his part, Mr Michel Sidibé, informed of various progress achieved in Haiti in terms of prevention and response to disease. "The number of infected newborns has decreased considerably, tangible evidence of the efforts of the Haitian Government and of institutions working in the system."
