Haiti - Education : Former President Fernández donates 13,000 books to the University Henri Christophe

On Tuesday morning, former President Fernández accompanied by among other : the Ambassador of the Dominican Republic in Haiti, Ruben Silié Ramirez, which was greeted by Professor Jean-Marie Théodat, Chairman of the Management Board of the campus and local elected officials, handed over a donation of 13,000 books at the University Henri Christophe, offered by Follett, a group of book distributors based in the United States. Unesco has also contributed to a lesser extent to the donation. The University Library, which included so far, about 6,000 books, seen with this donation, tripled the amount of reference books available to students.

Haitian students and teachers expressed their gratitude to the Dominican Republic in general and more specifically to Leonel Fernández.

Recall that the University Henri Christophe was offered by the Dominican Republic to Haiti after the earthquake of 2010 and built at a cost of about $30 million by the Supervising Engineers Office of State Works (Oficina de Ingenieros Supervisores de Obras del Estado) of the Dominican Republic.

This Dominican generosity, however, should not lead us to forget the situation at the border of Dajabon, where thousands of our countrymen are still forbidden to cross the border. Also the same Tuesday, they have prevented, in reprisal, the entry on the Haitian territory of several vehicles of the security service of former President Fernández. Alexis Rafael, Vice-Consul of Haiti in Dajabon, who visited the scene, deplored the decision of his countrymen as well as acts of individuals who burned tires outside the premises of the NGO Solidarité Frontalière.

Haitians forbidden to enter the Dominican Republic, who according to them, spent the holiday season in Haiti, claiming to be workers in the Dominican plantations and requires to be allowed to cross the border. However, this ban, would have as origin of contradictory information of Dominican migration services, which assert that the Haitian blocking the border, do not work in the Dominican Republic, but want to install especially in Santiago, where there is already a large community of Haitian illegal...
