Haiti - Elections : First Round in December ? 07/08/2013 12:20:54
Tholbert Jean Alexis, President of the Lower House, remains optimistic, indicating having consulted the executives of the Transitional College of the Permanent Electoral Council (CTCEP) and of the Minustah, who assured him that within four months, the elections can take place "The first round is possible late November or early December..." stating that if the project is submitted to Parliament on August 8, parliamentarians could vote the electoral law in a week and the electoral machine could then be turned on... The U.S. Democratic Senator (Florida) Bill Nelson, who was on a four-day visit to Haiti, after having met various political figures, including members of the opposition, said he was surprised by the degree of polarization between the opposition leaders and the President Martelly. "I saw no willingness to come together to compromise, which is essential for a struggling democracy to flourish [...]" adding that despite the animosity, the president indicated "that he will hold parliamentary elections this year" claiming having asked him "he ansered me yes, they will be achieved by the end of the year," said U.S. Senator. For his part, Senator John Joël Joseph, does not share the optimistic of the President of the Chamber of Deputies, convinced that the election can not take place before 2014, even insisting to say that these elections are impossible as long President Martelly will be in power, inviting colleagues to share his point of view on elections... Senator Jean-Baptiste Bien-Aimé (Northeast) states, only 24 hours after the availability of the report of the Presidential Commission that corrections or clarifications of the Executive are already rejected [?], he believes that the Presidency deliberately introduced traps in the bill [without giving an example], to pass the time and make responsible parliamentarians, if elections can be held this year... Note that yesterday Tuesday was held a meeting in a hotel in Petion-ville, between the Head of State and 51 members of the majority bloc "Member for Stability and Progress" (PSP). According to deputies present, the Head of State had informed them of his intention to hold the upcoming elections this year.
