Haiti - Security : «Operation shield» more than 22,000 troops along the Dominican border

Only for the month of January 2015 the Dominican authorities estimated at more than 25,000, the number of Haitians intercepted by members of CESFRONT (Cuerpo Especializado de Seguridad Fronteriza Terrestre) and the Dominican army who were repatriated to Haiti by the migration service, for attempting to enter without legal documents in Dominican territory.

Since January 2, 2015, the neighboring Republic launched the shield operation, which aims not only to counter illegal immigration, but also to fight against smuggling. This operation mobilizes (in rotation) according to official military sources, more than 22,000 soldiers all along the 350 km of the border between the two nations.

In addition to this deployment of troops, the Dominican Republic has installed since last year, more than 150 CCTV cameras at various crossing points of the border to detect illegal crossings, but also to monitor the binational markets and fight against corruption and the "racket" of Dominican soldiers at border posts.

In addition to the interceptions of our countrymen in search of a better life, during the month of January, the armed forces have confirmed having seized 190 motorcycles and thirty vehicles used to transport illegal immigrants. Various smuggled goods were also seized, including nearly 8 tons of garlic, 344 bags of onions, 260 sacks of charcoal, 290 cases of cigarettes and more than 18,000 bottles of alcohol includeing various brands of rum.

Commander of the Army, Major-General José Eugenio Matos de la Cruz, said that the army also made significant efforts to capture ismugglers of illegal persons, confirming the recent arrest of two Dominicans and Haitians. Also 5 firearms as well as nearly 40 kg of marijuana were seized in a joint operation with the DNCD (Dirección Nacional de Control de Drogas)
