Haiti - FLASH Laura : 31 dead, 8 missing, more than 8,000 victims and significant agricultural losses (assessment August 28)
New assessment of tropical storm Laura which passed over Haiti on August 23. This review covers the period from 23 to Friday 28 August 4:00 p.m. and is produced using information from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA-Haiti) in collaboration with humanitarian partners and the Directorate General of Civil Protection (DGPC).

During the passage of tropical storm Laura, 28 communes in 4 departments (South, South-East, West and Nippes) have been seriously affected by flooding. The human toll from Tropical Storm Laura now stands at 31 dead (including 16 in the Southeast and 12 in the West), 8 people are still missing and 8 others have been injured.

Civil Protection has requested humanitarian aid for at least 8,835 affected families whose houses were damaged (2,320), flooded (6,272) or destroyed (243) by the storm, many roads and bridges were damaged, and some areas are only accessible by air or sea https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-31635-haiti-flash-new-partial-assessment-of-the-post-laura-situation-august-25-2020.html

The destruction of crops and forests has been observed in various regions, notably around Anse-a-Pitres, in Mapou, and Belle-Anse in Jacmel. The DGPC reported agricultural losses in the departments of South-East, West, South of Artibonite, Grand'Anse, Nippes and North-West. In many communes in the Sud-Est department, it is estimated that losses are significant, ranging from 50 to 80% for certain crops.

Southeast Department:
2,917 houses were flooded, 1,760 were damaged and 193 destroyed. The most affected municipalities are: Anse-à-Pitres, Jacmel, Marigot, Cayes-Jacmel, Thiotte, Belle-Anse, Grand-Gosier, Bainet and Côte de Fer.

The National Directorate of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DINEPA), supported by UNICEF, delivered 50,000 aquatabs (representing a one-month supply for 2,500 people) by helicopter to the town of Anse-à- Pitres to allow him access to drinking water. Currently, Anse-à-Pitres remains accessible only by air or sea. Civil Protection delivered 3,000 food kits and 800 shelter kits in the South-East and mattresses in Cayes-Jacmel and Anse-à-Pitres. West Department :
3,037 houses were flooded, 419 were damaged and 28 were destroyed. The most affected municipalities are Léogâne, Carrefour, Tabarre, Pétion-ville and Cité Soleil. The DGPC distributed 1,000 shelter kits in Cité Soleil to repair damaged houses, and 10,000 food kits in the communes of Pélerin and Cité Soleil. South Department :
117 houses were flooded, 24 were damaged and 5 destroyed. The most affected municipalities in the department are Tiburon, Les Anglais and Port-à-Piment.

Department of Nippes :
197 houses were flooded. The most affected communes are Baradère and Miragoâne.
