Haiti - FLASH : Message from Odette Roy Fombrun (103) about to leave 16/10/2020 09:32:26
Recall that Ms. Fombrun has been particularly noted in recent years for her interventions and public positions in the socio-political life of Haiti. Message from Odette Roy Fombrun : "I am 103 years old. Needless to say, after having fought so hard for my country and its youth, how sad I am to be about to leave leaving my country in tatters, our divided elites and the majority in misery, at the mercy of lawless gangsters and murderers. Every day, there is talk of 'kraze-brize', of burning public and private property, even schools and university centers, of enumerating the names of new victims or groups of victims like those of the tragedies of La Saline and St Louis du Nord where hundreds of homes are destroyed and residents killed by two fighting gangs. How to envision the future? Are elections and political meetings possible in the midst of this debacle and this Covid-19 virus which imposes distancing and wearing of masks? Will we be able to produce and distribute to voters the millions of identity cards indispensable in this atmosphere of unrest and destruction? What options are desirable or even possible? To answer these questions, I affirm that it is essential to plan and organize a real National 'Konbit', the inevitable National Conference so desired which will decide the way to take for the future of the country. Whatever your political beliefs, your current options, whether you are from the government, the opposition, civil society, various religious denominations or unfortunately gangs, you are all Haitian citizens and you have an obligation to support and participate in this national meeting, without exclusion or exclusion. You can draw inspiration from the proposals of the Episcopal Conference of Bishops of August 17 and 18, 2002 where Turnep Delpé, Bishops Mgr Pierre André Dumas and Mgr Nunez, Joseph Amary Noel, Dr Josette Bijou, me and many others were present. We were on the right track. But, alas, despite the advances, the 'kraze-brize', the generalized 'boulé', the 'lock' country have taken over! Today, I am convinced that we also need the intelligent participation of experienced, neutral and determined moderators to lead the discussions and facilitate the preparation and monitoring of agreements. I affirm that the presence of such moderators is essential to the success of any National Conference. I also say that everyone must rise to the level of a true citizen by agreeing to make personal sacrifices in favor of the country, political and economic stability, the return to the constitutional path and the strengthening of institutions. It is imperative to stop this descent into hell by having each of us the humility to recognize that, alone, nor in small dispersed groups, we can do nothing; that none of us have the ideal solution to put the country back on the track of peace and development. That we need the “tèt ensanm”! This is no longer the time to think about a country lock, reversal of governance or unilateral decisions of authorities. History has proven to us time and time again that these are all options that have failed and plunged the country and its citizens into misery. The wisdom and love of the country require us to work together to curb the violence and the inadmissible destruction of our institutions, our moral and civic values, our intelligentsia, our historical and cultural heritage to finally begin, with honesty, the constructive exchanges essential. We must agree! You need to agree on wisdom options for a constructive and inclusive future! I say goodbye to you with all my best wishes for PEACE and HAPPINESS for all Odette Roy Fombrun."
