Haiti - Politic : The Government confirms the referendum despite international reluctance

Tuesday, May 4, 2021 in his official residence, Prime Minister a.i. Claude Joseph, gave his first press conference where he confirmed the will of the Government to organize a referendum on June 27, 2021 on the new Constitution.

To the concerns of the Core Group, of May 26th https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-33578-haiti-politic-the-core-group-deeply-concerned.html which said it was concerned about the fact that "[...] this process is not at this stage sufficiently inclusive, participatory or transparent. Such a reform should take place on the basis of a broad consultation that involves all of the nation’s vital force." And to the United States which after having renewed their call for the organization of elections clarified about the referendum "[...] We stressed to the Haitian Government that the American government will not provide financial support for a constitutional referendum" https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-33632-haiti-cep-where-is-the-financing-of-the-referendum-and-the-elections.html

Prime Minister Jospeh replied "Some of the concerns expressed by our international friends are well founded and legitimate [...] A referendum must indeed be an inclusive process, which is why the President initiated the process of dialogue [...] but a referendum is an act of sovereignty. It mainly concerns Haitians, they are the ones who decide whether or not they want a referendum to change the Constitution."

Asked about the declaration of Senator Joseph Lambert who recommends a foreign armed intervention in Haiti to resolve the problem of insecurity https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-33643-haiti-news-zapping.html the Prime Minister specified "The problem of insecurity is national. Therefore the solution must be national. This is why the PNH is determined to fight insecurity in all its forms."
