Haiti - Health : Additional $10 million to complete the construction of the Hospital of the State University of Haiti
The French Development Agency (AFD), the American Agency for International Development (USAID), the Ministries of Economy and Finance and Public Health have signed a financing agreement for an amount of 10 million dollars for the completion of the construction of the Hospital of the State University of Haiti (HUEH).

Entrusted to AFD by USAID, this additional amount will make it possible to complete the financing plan for the HUEH construction project, the overall cost of which is estimated at just over 100 million US dollars (including 39.4 million Euros from France, 35 million from the USA and 27.2 million from the Haitian State).

This amount of 10 million will be dedicated exclusively to the financing of construction works whose completion rate is currently estimated at 90%. https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-38109-icihaiti-reconstruction-the-hospital-of-the-state-university-of-haiti-finalized-at-90.html

The initial HUEH rehabilitation project was initiated in 2010 following the earthquake that largely destroyed Haiti's largest hospital center https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-1230-haiti-reconstruction-50-million-for-the-haiti-s-state-university-hospital.html The rehabilitation work of the new reference hospital co-financed by the Haitian State, France and the United States to the tune of 41.48 million of dollars, carried out by the Spanish firm "Teyico Elecnor", began in September 2013 and was initially supposed to last nearly 3 years... However, the site has experienced operational difficulties since its start, resulting in delays and additional costs.

In addition to the Haitian Government's delay in disbursement causing a series of closures of the site, the numerous socio-political unrest, insecurity and new aspects of project development are some of the reasons explaining the delays of several years in the execution of the works...

The cost of the hospital with a total area of 25.078 m2 (10 buildings) and a capacity of 534 beds, located on 2 sites with a total area of 5.7 hectares, increases to 83.2 million dollars (25 million dollars from the French Government and 25 million by the American Government. Haiti for its part, will provide 33.2 million dollars for the logistics of the new Hospital and reaches 101 million today.)

In the meantime, various transitional structures have been put in place to allow the hospital to continue to carry out its care mission.

Alongside the completion of the hospital complex, AFD is mobilizing experts in hospital management and logistics to prepare for the move and the start of activities in the new hospital, scheduled for 2023.

Once the project is completed, the HUEH teams will have a modern reference work tool adapted to their needs, both in terms of infrastructure, equipment and management. Ultimately, this new hospital will provide the Haitian population with access to quality care at an affordable cost.
