Haiti - Diplomacy : The President Martelly received in audience by Pope Benedict XVI

This Thursday, November 22, 2012, the President Michel Martelly that completes his European tour, was received in audience by Pope Benedict XVI. Upon arrival, the Head of State, received to the Holy See (Vatican), a warm welcome from Mgr Angelo Acerbi, with whom he had a fraternal dialogue, in the presence of Mgr Jose Avelino Bettencourt, Chief of Protocol of the Vatican.

According to a statement from the Vatican, during their talks, the two men confirmed the good relations between the Holy See and the State of Haiti. He was also pointed out the particular contribution offered by the Church through its educational, social and charitable activities, especially during the earthquake that struck the Haitian people and the reconstruction phase. During the conversation, was treated with a particular interest the importance to continue the cooperation, for the harmonious development of the society in Haiti.

The President Martelly has also met with Cardinal Secretary of State Tarcisio Bertone and Mgr Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States.

His Excellency Mr. Michel Joseph Martelly, President of Haiti, accompanied by his wife (Sophia Martelly St Remy) and his family (his children Olivier, Sandro, Yani, and Malaika)

At the end of the meeting the President Martelly has offered to His Holiness a drum decorated with sequins. Benedict XVI offered his guest a silver platter incised with the image of St. Peter's Basilica.

In addition, that same day, the Head of State of Haiti will meet to Rome, José Graziano da Silva, the Secretary General of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The day before, the President Martelly has been received at the Royal Palace of Brussels, by the Princess Mathilde of Belgium. At this meeting, the focus was on the themes of the education, health and nutrition. They also discussed the protection of children in the context of the mission that will lead the Princess Mathilde, Honorary President of UNICEF Belgium, in Haiti from 5 to 8 December 2012. The objective of this mission is to visit UNICEF projects on the thematic of access to education in rural areas.
