Haiti - Politic : Towards the provision of identity to all Haitian paperless... 12/02/2014 08:03:33
According to Jean-Baptiste St-Cyr, the Director General of the National Identification Office (ONI) within approximately one month, the Haitian Government will launch an extensive program of regularization of all undocumented Haitian nationals illegally living abroad. It targets mainly the Dominican Republic, but also Turks and Caicos Islands and Suriname. This program for a period of one year, funded exclusively by the Government of Haiti with the funds of the Treasury, is estimated at about 2.5 million. It aims not only to provide these Haitian legal documents, but also to enable them to enjoy all the privileges of a Haitian citizen. Jean-Baptiste St-Cyr explained that several exploration missions were carried out to ensure that it can meet the commitments made by the Prime Minister, Laurent Lamothe, at the last meeting of the two "ad hoc" committees Haitian and Dominican Republic, in Jimani, to provide identity documents to all undocumented Haitians. For this purpose, of fixed registration points will be installed in these countries, particularly in communities with strong Haitian population. For compatriots living in remote areas, of mobile registration units will be used as was done successfully in Haiti. Several meetings will be held prior to the logistics of deployment and implementation of this program. Moreover, Jean-Baptiste St-Cyr specified that all legal provisions had been adopted by the Government, which has issued an order to simplify the procedure for Haitians to regularize their situation and get a ID more easily such as a National Identification Card (CIN) or Passport. The process will be supervised by the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Justice, Interior, Haitians living abroad and the Government. The National Archives should also give their help in this program. All data will be repatriated to Haiti, to be stored in a database and CIN will be produced in Haiti for security issues, said the Director General of ONI.
