Haiti Humanitarian : SOUTHCOM completes its relief operations

During the three weeks following the magnitude 7.2 earthquake, which hit hard the Great South of Haiti, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and the United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) of the Department Defense teams worked in a rush to get aid to hard-to-reach areas as quickly as possible.
Today, as access to affected communities by land and sea has improved and civilian transport options, including UN air, truck and barge services have become available, it was jointly determined that U.S. military assets are no longer required for airlift and logistical support of the U.S. government's humanitarian response.
Recall that the Joint Task Force (JTF-Haiti) and the coast guard mobilized 19 helicopters, 6 ships and 8 transport planes, as well as about 1,200 people, to support USAID response efforts. During the 20 days spent in Haiti, JTF-Haiti provided aerial imagery of damaged areas, carried out 671 missions to deliver aid and response staff, delivered 267 metric tons of humanitarian cargo, including food, water, medical equipment and other essential relief supplies, transported approximately 200 aid workers, including USAID disaster experts, to affected areas, and assisted or rescued 477 people.
USAID will continue to lead the US response to the earthquake to provide food, shelter, health care, and other urgent aid to affected communities.
The number of civil organizations supporting earthquake response efforts in affected areas has also increased. As of September 1st, the UN has identified more than 95 NGOs and international organizations working hard to provide humanitarian aid and support relief operations in Haiti, including 68 in the South department and Nippes and 28 in the Grand Anse. These organizations add to the tireless work of the many local organizations that have supported their communities since the earthquake.
