Haiti - History : Message of reflection from Lesly Condé
Message from Lesly Condé :
"Dear fellow citizens and friends everywhere,
Having reached the end of the year 2022, we all need a moment of hindsight to appreciate all that we have experienced, learned and accomplished during this period of our existence. There were days when everything was fine. There were also days when everything seemed to combine to make us unhappy. All in all, there have been victories and defeats. The victories served to make us more humble, more confident and more forgiving. These are positive experiences that we can share with our loved ones to help them move forward better. For their part, defeats are always lessons in humility. They invite us to evaluate our judgment and our means. The lessons we learn from it make us stronger and wiser. We also have some good advice for our friends. We are therefore at that time of the year when we seek the company of those who are dear to us. For my part, I thank you very much for accepting that I enjoy your company, and I wish you much success and happiness for the year 2023.
Each new year that comes always brings renewed optimism and new energy. We are almost always right to believe that our positive energy will produce great results. But there will always be problems to solve. There will always be lessons to learn. Even if we are approaching this end of the year period with fewer restrictions than last year, caution is still in order, and we have a duty to take good care of ourselves. Only by staying in good shape can we make 2023 a success.
For us Haitians, the first day of January is also and above all one of the most important historical dates. This year we are celebrating the 219th anniversary of the glorious day on which Haiti, the first sovereign black nation in the New World, was born. January 1, 1804 has gone down in history as the day when slavery was decisively defeated. It was on November 18, 1803, during the famous Battle of Vertières, that Jean-Jacques Dessalines, at the head of an army of former slaves, inflicted a humiliating and unmistakable defeat on Napoleon's slave army. January 2nd of each year is also a day dedicated to our valiant ancestors. If nations around the world don't join us in celebrating freedom, they still don't know it.
At the start of this year, I can only think to the devastating earthquake that struck our country on January 12, 2010. There are pains that will never go away, and survivors who no longer have any reason to 'to exist. Do not hesitate to make a gesture of solidarity whenever you have the opportunity.
In closing, I wish you all an excellent year 2023 in prudence, peace and security. Aware of all the challenges, I especially wish you enough courage and wisdom to overcome them.
Thank you for your attention !. »
