Friday October 13, 2023, the customs authorities of Belladère (Central Department), a commune in Haiti located near the Dominican border, seized several dozen boxes containing a total of around 15,000 eggs. This unconcealed merchandise was found in a truck of Haitian origin coming from the Dominican territory introduced through the border post of Carrizal (Province of Elías Piña).

Customs explains that this interception was carried out within the framework of article 259 of the Customs Code of 1987, articles 227, 228 and 229, referring to the smuggling of goods and which gives them the power of seizure.

On Saturday, the authorities of Belladère, including the town hall and members of the Border Police (PoliFRONT) proceeded to destroy the cargo of eggs by fire.

The customs report indicates that the owner of the eggs is a Haitian-Dominican citizen known as "Fredy" who has been in the egg trade for several years.

According to witnesses, "Fredy" would have been very surprised by this decision of the customs services, especially since such a situation has never occurred before with the eggs he sells… and this merchandise would have been introduced legally in Haiti...

Since the closure of the Dominican borders linked to the construction of an irrigation canal in Haiti with water intake on the Massacre River, the cause of a conflict between the two nations of the island, the situation has become very tense and used for political purposes...

Let's remember that in the past, it was not uncommon for members of Haitian customs to seize goods purchased by Haitian traders (especially on market days) for unpaid taxes or racketeering and who knows in the present case perhaps Is this retaliation for not having respected the order not to buy Dominican products...
