Haiti - Politic : The Task Force on Haiti, requests immediate support for Haiti 23/04/2023 10:24:32
After its mission in Haiti, the Task Force on Haiti of the Organization of American States (OAS) composed of fourteen member states (Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, United States , Guatemala, Jamaica, Panama, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay) who met with the Haitian Executive presented to the OAS Permanent Council "a detailed report on security and humanitarian aid" in Haiti.
The report explains that Haiti is going through a serious crisis at all levels. Heavily armed gangs control much of the territory of the Haitian capital, committing all kinds of crimes, in addition to the resurgence of cholera. A crisis that has caused a significant increase in Haitian migration, including through dangerous sea routes to neighboring Caribbean countries and to the United States and underscores that much of the humanitarian aid sent so far by the international community is meant to alleviate insecurity in the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince, so resources reach other areas only marginally.
The report believes that OAS member states and permanent observer states "should be encouraged" to "integrate, innovate, complement, and coordinate their efforts with other actors to provide timely assistance and support" to the Haitian people.
Anthony Phillips-Spencer, Ambassador of Trinidad and Tobago to the OAS and Chair of the Working Group for Haiti, stressed that the main objective of the report is "to provide information to States on areas that have need assistance" and "immediate support" such as security and democracy. On this last point, Phillips-Spencer stressed the need to send humanitarian and electoral assistance in order to organize "free and fair" elections.
According to the OAS, entities such as the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) have already agreed to collaborate with the Task Force in the coming months.
Let's recall that the Haitian Prime Minister, Ariel Henry, had requested in October 2022 the intervention of a specialized armed force, to fight gangs, still without result so far despite many efforts https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-37831-haiti-flash-towards-a-foreign-armed-intervention-in-haiti-to-eliminate-gangs.html , the United States and Canada refusing until now to take the lead this possible armed coalition...
The American Frank O. Mora, Permanent Ambassador to the OAS and also Vice-Chairman of the Working Group, declared that "the need for this assistance is urgent" and welcomes the appeal launched by the group of working with international partners to "contribute financial, human, material or technical support to help Haiti deal with its worsening security crisis."
