Haiti - Elections : The United Nations Mission and the IC called for elections 22/08/2013 13:45:42
Tuesday, Sandra Honoré, the new Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Haiti to lead a delegation of diplomats composed of the United States Ambassador Pamela White, of the Canadian Ambassador Henri-Paul Normandin, the Ambassador of France Patrick Nicolosso, members of the European Union and the United Nations, paid a "courtesy" visit to the to the Parliament and met with the Deputy Jean Tholbert Alexis, President of the Chamber of Deputies about the overall situation of the country and the organization of elections before the end of the year. Sandra Honoré expressed the concerns of the United Nations and the International Community (IC) on the holding of elections before the end of 2013, highlighting the importance of elections in building the institutions of a country saying "It is the wish of the international community and the United Nations that these elections are held this year," ensuring that the Minustah, through its unit of electoral assistance will continue to support the Haitian authorities including the Transitional College of the Permanent Electoral Council (CTCEP). Jean Tholbert Alexis took the opportunity to show once again very critical vis-à-vis the Head of State, whose the lack of leadership, according to him, prevents him from creating favorable conditions for the organization of the next election. Stressing that the lower house should go on parliamentary vacation in two weeks, he lamented that the electoral law has not yet been forwarded to Parliament, pointing to the Head of State as solely responsible for the pre electoral-crisis... At the end of the visit, the Representative of the Secretary General of the United Nations declared " " We discussed the political situation and of our interest to see the preservation of institutional stability in the country as part of the socio-economic development [...] The United Nations and the international community have called for the organization of elections before the end of the year. We'll see how the Haitian institutions can respond to this call.
