Haiti - FLASH : Ransacking of the Senate, national and international reactions
Following the staggering ransacking of the Senate sitting room https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-27857-haiti-flash-a-session-under-high-security-the-senate-ransacked.html Thursday, May 30 in the morning, by 4 senators of the opposition Evalière Beauplan (PONT); Antonio Cheramy aka "Don Kato" (TRUTH), Ricard Pierre (Piti Dessalin) and Nenel Cassy (Famni Lavalas) to prevent the holding of the ratification session for the 3rd time (Sunday, May 12 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-27715-haiti-politic-the-opposition-minority-forces-the-senate-to-postpone-the-ratification-meeting-of-the-pm.html and Tuesday, May 14 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-27730-haiti-flash-violence-in-the-senate-the-opposition-wins-a-2nd-victory-the-pm-ratification-postponed.html ) the reactions and the condemnations of these acts multiply.

The international community represented in Haiti commonly known as the Core Group (composed of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Ambassadors of Germany, Brazil, Canada, Spain, United States of America, of France, the European Union and the Special Representative of the Organization of American States condemns the acts of degradation committed against the Senate "To overcome these blockages, members of the group call for the holding of a broad national debate, without pre-conditions, bringing together the political sector and the private sector as well as civil society. This debate should make it possible to initiate a reform agenda, ensure the holding of parliamentary elections and the proper functioning of the institutions. These advances are necessary to provide concrete and effective responses to the daily difficulties of the population."

Senator Dieudonné Luma Etienne said "It is regrettable to see that violence prevails over the democratic gains of my country and that it is used as a political tool by politicians."

Senator Kedlaire Augustin does not hesitate to treat the four opposition senators as "state terrorists"

Senator Joseph Lambert deplores this ransacking "Today, fellow senators have recidivated. They demolished everything in the meeting room. They used brutal force to make up for their inability to engage in substantive debates" reminding "Yet, the Senate is a space for contradictory debates."

Canada condemned the "acts of vandalism in the Senate on Thursday. This deplorable event goes against democratic principles. Canada calls for a national dialogue aimed at solutions to the security, economic and social crisis affecting the Haitian population."

The 4 senators, the minority opposition leaders, are visibly proud and satisfied with their actions, claiming to have sacked the Senate "in the interest of the people".

"Don Kato" said "[...] the destruction of the Senate furniture can not be equated with acts of violence..." (broken windows, sound system destroyed, wiring torn off, armchair and furniture damaged and thrown into the air outside...). He even goes so far as to assert implicitly, to act in the name of the population adding "We thank the Haitian people who understood the dimension of today's battle [...] it is the people who are fighting today, who makes history". Senator Cheramy even boasts of his actions, claiming to have destroyed the sound system and furniture to prevent the meeting and the violation by his colleagues in the Constitution...

On his side Senator Beauplan explained to justify his actions "[...] when one is a minority, everything is a matter of strategy to achieve one's ends [...]" he even manages to compare himself through a tortuous historical journey to "Capois la Mort" during the battle of Vertières...

Recall that after these acts of vandalism, there was a physical confrontation between members of the population, activists close to the opposition came to reinforce the 4 senators of the opposition and agents of the National Police of Haiti (PNH) and the Intervention and Maintenance Corps (CIMO). Senator Ronald Larêche in his vehicle was targeted by opposition activists who broke his windows and the windshield of his vehicle as he tried to flee Parliament.

Gunshots in the air, tear gas and muscular charges, the units of the police have ended up restoring order and calm around noon...
