Haiti - Environment : 1,451 earthquakes in Haiti in 2022
The Technical Unit of Seismology (UTS) of the Bureau of Mines and Energy (BME), has made public its annual report of seismic activities recorded in Haiti during the year 2022. The information is collected from local networks ( yiti-earthquakes and UTS) and regional (Cuba, Jamaica and Dominican Republic).

1,451 earthquakes of magnitude between 0.7 and 5.5 were recorded. The highest magnitude noted for the year 2022 was 5.5 occurring at 8:16'22" on January 23 near the town of Anse-à-Veau in the department of Nippes https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-35794-haiti-flash-2-earthquakes-of-magnitude-greater-than-5-provisional-report-update-3-48-pm.html

The monthly distribution of these 1,451 earthquakes is very uneven with an average value of 109 earthquakes per month.

Monthly distribution of earthquakes in 2022:
January: 311
February: 137
March: 179
April: 108
May: 117
June: 113
July: 138
August: 82
September: 67
October: 65
November: 78
December: 56

Breakdown by department of recorded earthquakes
The earthquakes recorded during the year are distributed across the 10 geographical departments of the country. Grand'Anse, Nippes and Sud are at the top of the list due to the consequences of the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that occurred on August 14, 2021 in the Nippes department https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-34479-haiti-flash-magnitude-72-earthquake-in-the-nippes-updated-10am.html . These departments are followed by those of the West, North-West, South-East and North-East. The departments where the seismic activities were the least intense during this year are the North, the Artibonite and the Center.

Grand'Anse: 633
Nipples: 406
South: 156
West: 87
North West. : 73
Southeast: 39
Northeast: 35
North: 13
Artibonite: 4
Center: 5

The analysis of the evolutionary curves of the earthquakes recorded in the three (3) departments most affected by the earthquake of August 14, 2021 in the Nippes show how much a major earthquake occurring in a region can lead to a certain number of aftershocks around its epicentre, but also unpredictable consequences going to the activation of certain non-active faults located in its periphery. It can also locally increase, for a certain time, the seismic activity of the region to the detriment of the other departments. During the year, the seismic stations recorded for the three departments in question 1,195 earthquakes of magnitude less than or equal to 5.5.

It should be noted that the department of Grand'Anse experienced intense seismic activity throughout 2022 with 634 earthquakes out of 1.195, or 53% of these earthquakes. Most of the epicenters were located at sea, north of Jérémie, around the Nord-Grand'Anse-Nippes fault. Recall that the town of Jérémie is located about 70 km west of the epicenter of the earthquake of August 14 and that the tremors of Grand'Anse are similar to a reactivation of the Nord-Grand'Anse-Nippes fault. Earthquakes at sea around this fault represent approximately 89% (568) of all earthquakes recorded for the year in Grand'Anse (634).
