Haiti - FLASH : More details on the multinational mission of at least 2,600 men
Thursday, November 9, 2023, Kithure Kindiki The Minister of the Interior of Kenya responded to questions from the joint security committee of the National Assembly and the Kenyan Senate on the deployment in Haiti of the Multinational Security Support Mission (MMSS)

Kithure Kindiki affirmed that so far, 11 countries will also send troops to Haiti as part of this Mission including Senegal (350 men), Burundi (250), Chile, Jamaica, Ecuador, Barbados (200 each) and Seychelles which will deploy 190 officers. For a total of 1,590 men who will be added to the 1,000 Kenyans. Emphasizing, "We are not sending an occupying force, we are sending a force to support the structures already existing in this country, on the basis of their request," he assured.

Furthermore, Minister Kindiki mentioned the costs linked to the MMAS in Haiti which over one year will amount to more than 230 million dollars for the deployment of 1,000 officers. He explained to MPs that this budget includes training, administrative support, transport, the purchase of technical equipment, general equipment and the purchase of weapons, ammunition and anti-riot materials.

He told the Committee that these funds will be supported by voluntary contributions from Member States and United Nations organizations through a trust fund and not with Kenyan taxpayers' money, adding that Kenya will only send its forces to Haiti when he will have received the funds necessary for this deployment.

Note that the overall budget (including other countries) could exceed 500 million dollars
